HURRICANE IDA CLAIMS - The Voorhies Law Firm

The Voorhies Law Firm Is Here to Help You With Your Hurricane Insurance Claim

Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on August 29, 2021. The Category 4 storm passed through Port Fourchon, Louisiana, on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and traveled north towards southwest Mississippi, gradually getting weaker as it headed inland. While many Louisiana residents were relieved at its passing, millions were without power, and hundreds of residents filed flood claims.

At The Voorhies Law Firm, we want those who are filing property damage claims due to Hurricane Ida to know what to expect and to understand their rights. If you are having trouble getting the coverage you paid for, for example, you have the right to file suit to recover what you are entitled to under your policy and the law.

About Hurricane Ida

The National Hurricane Center told many Louisiana residents to evacuate before Hurricane Ida. The hurricane brought storm surges, flooding rains, strong winds, and tornadoes. Louisianians assessed the damages, and over 1,600 emergency personnel were deployed across the state to go on search and rescue missions, according to Gov. John Bel Edwards.

More About Hurricane Ida

In addition to the millions of people without power in Louisiana, over 133,000 people living in Mississippi struggled with the same issues, according to poweroutage.us. Some roads were flooded before the hurricane even hit. After landfall, tens of thousands lacked drinkable water, and many lost their homes, belongings; and as of September 8, 2021, 82 people had died across eight states from the vast flooding the storm brought in.

Once Ida weakened to a tropical storm, flash flood warnings remained in effect all over the country. Much of the storm damage was caused by fallen trees, even though Hurricane Ida was among the stronger storms ever to hit Louisiana.

Commercial buildings were torn apart, vehicles were turned, power lines fell, billboards were destroyed, and loose trees littered everywhere. Winds of up to 150 mph tore through roofs, cracked windows, and toppling trees destroyed hundreds of homes.

What to do next

Survivors of Hurricane Ida are working on rebuilding, and many home and property owners are turning to insurance policies to do so. Our firm can help those hit hardest by Hurricane Ida. Let us help you rebuild your home or business.

What To Expect From Your Insurance Company

Louisiana residents with flood and wind insurance are beginning to make claims related to Hurricane Ida. When you look at your insurance policy, consider that flood insurance and wind insurance are often not the same. Similarly to policies offered through the National Flood Insurance Program, flood insurance may only cover damage below the flood’s water line. It will only cover mold damage if homeowners follow EPA guidelines for removing and preventing the growth and spread of mold.

In any case, you should expect your insurance adjuster to be in touch soon after your claim. Once you report your loss to an insurance agent, you should receive instructions on documenting your loss. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some insurance adjusters are still working remotely, so you could be responsible for taking photos and videos, preserving samples of carpets, drapes, upholstery, and other building materials; and taking measurements.

If you follow the instructions from your insurance company and communicate your needs, you should receive coverage according to your policy.

If you do not, you have the right to sue – and our Louisiana hurricane damage lawyers can help.
